Dr. David Rankin is skilled in a range of procedures designed to refine and rejuvenate a person's facial features. The variety of cosmetic surgery procedures he offers, including facelift surgery, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, neck lift, and brow lift, affords his patients in West Palm Beach and other areas of Palm Beach County the freedom that comes with being able to choose from a number of facial enhancement options.
Also known as a forehead lift, brow lift surgery is designed to correct a drooping forehead and smooth forehead creases that may make a person appear tired or angry. Often, a brow lift is performed in conjunction with a facelift to achieve a totally rejuvenated facial appearance.
Dr. Rankin evaluates patients for brow lift surgery at our Palm Beach County offices, near West Palm Beach. During the initial consultation, Dr. Rankin examines a patient's skin and facial features to determine what type of procedure best meets his or her unique needs. Patients are encouraged to discuss openly what they wish to achieve with brow lift surgery. Occasionally, Dr. Rankin will recommend another procedure, such as eyelid surgery, that may better meet a patient's goals.
To customize the procedure for each individual patient, two methods of brow lift surgery are available. Dr. Rankin is skilled in both of these techniques.
During "open" brow lift surgery, Dr. Rankin makes an incision behind the patient's hairline above each brow. This allows Dr. Rankin to lift the skin and expose the underlying muscles. After altering the muscles of the forehead to reduce wrinkling, Dr. Rankin smoothes the skin back over the forehead, removing any excess skin, and sutures it into place.
Endoscopic brow lift surgery involves making several, smaller incisions. Through one of these incisions, Dr. Rankin inserts a tiny camera, called an endoscope, which allows him to see and manipulate the tissue and forehead muscles beneath the skin.
After surgery, the location of the incision may feel numb or sore. Discomfort can be effectively managed with pain medicine prescribed by Dr. Rankin. Swelling may also occur, and it is recommended that the patient rest with his or her head elevated to reduce this temporary effect. Typically, it takes about 5 days before patients feel ready to return to work or school, though strenuous activities should be avoided until patients are fully healed.
Neck lift surgery, also known as neck contouring, is designed to reduce the appearance of sagging skin that may make a person look older than he or she feels. A neck lift can also benefit those that have inherited a double chin or a neckline that is poorly defined. Neck lift surgery is often performed at the same time as a facelift procedure at our Palm Beach County practice for a complete makeover.
During the neck lift procedure, Dr. Rankin improves the contour of the neck by removing excess fat and loose skin. Dr. Rankin may also tighten loose or weakened neck muscles. After the procedure, patients are given a compression garment to wear that helps to reduce swelling and stabilize the neck during the healing process.
Dr. Rankin can perform otoplasty, or ear surgery, to set protruding ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Ear surgery can improve a person's appearance by making the ears more proportionate to the head. Since the ears must be fully developed before otoplasty can be performed, it is usually recommended that patients be at least 5 or 6 years of age before undergoing surgery.
Ear surgery at our Palm Beach County practice is typically performed under sedation or local anesthesia and usually involves making a small incision at the back of the ear, through which the cartilage is reshaped. After surgery, the ears are carefully protected with a bandage that wraps around the head. During the healing process, it is vital that the ears be protected from contact. Therefore, contact sports should be avoided for at least a month.
Most commonly used to enhance the chin and cheek areas, facial implants can lend a better sense of balance and proportion to a person's face. They are also popular with patients who are undergoing facelift surgery and would like to enhance facial contours that over time have lost volume.
During chin implant surgery, the doctor makes a small incision, made under the chin or inside the mouth, through which the implant is inserted.
Cheek implant surgery typically involves an incision inside of the upper lip or beneath the lower eyelid. When performed in conjunction with another facial cosmetic surgery procedure, such as a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery, insertion of the cheek implants may not require additional incisions.
Also known as skin-refinishing, dermabrasion may benefit those who wish to reduce the prominence of facial scars or wrinkles. The dermabrasion procedure is relatively quick and involves the use of a special machine to scrape away the top layer of skin. After this process, it is important to protect the skin while it heals. Sun, wind, and chemicals such as chlorine should be avoided for at least a month.
While dermabrasion is highly effective for removing damaged skin, the procedure is not appropriate for everyone. The procedure may result in uneven skin pigmentation in people with darker complexions. Patients with darker skin tones and those with particularly sensitive skin may wish to consider less invasive procedures, such as chemical peels or microdermabrasion, to help them achieve the refreshed look they desire.
