In addition to breast augmentation, our South Florida plastic surgeon addresses a variety of issues involving the breasts. With an eye for balance and proportion, Dr. David Rankin achieves outstanding results with male breast reduction, breast implant revision, cosmetic nipple surgery, and breast reconstruction (with or without breast implants) at our office in the Jupiter, South Florida area, near West Palm Beach.
Breast reconstruction makes it possible for a woman to regain a shapely, feminine contour after a mastectomy. Most mastectomy patients are suitable candidates for breast reconstruction and it is frequently possible for reconstruction surgery to begin immediately following a mastectomy. There are two basic types of breast reconstruction surgery. The pros and cons of each type are thoroughly discussed during a breast reconstruction consultation with Dr. Rankin.
The most common type of breast reconstruction involves the placement of a breast implant. First, a skin expander, a balloon-like device, is inserted beneath the skin and chest muscle. Over a period of several weeks, the balloon is gradually filled with liquid, making the muscle and skin stretch just enough to accommodate the insertion of the breast implant.
For women who do not want breast implants, flap reconstruction is an alternative breast reconstruction procedure. It involves the removal or relocation of tissue from another part of the body, such as the back, the abdomen, or the buttocks, to the breast.
Patients can learn more about breast reconstruction with or without breast implants at our Jupiter and Lake Worth, South Florida, locations.
Although there are new procedures that may allow a patient to keep her nipple, sometimes mastectomy surgery necessitates its removal. In order to provide patients with the most natural-looking replacement nipples, Dr. Rankin performs an innovative procedure. Using skin transferred from another part of the body, or through use of a local skin flap, Dr. Rankin expertly fashions a permanent replacement nipple. To complete the transformation, the newly created nipple may be tattooed using pigment that complements the patient's skin tone.
Sometimes, a breast surgery procedure performed at another location may not meet a woman's expectations. In other cases, a woman may wish to increase or decrease her cup-size with a breast implant revision. Whether a woman is unhappy with the results of a surgery performed by another doctor or her aesthetic or physical needs have changed, Dr. Rankin can perform breast implant revision using saline or silicone breast implants at our practice in the West Palm Beach area, near Palm Beach Gardens.
Inverted nipples or nipples that are overly large or protruding can make women feel self-conscious about their bodies. At our practice in Jupiter area, Dr. Rankin uses a number of different techniques to treat these conditions. In many cases, natural nipple sensation is retained and the surgery does not interfere with the ability for women to breastfeed.
Gynecomastia, or male breast development, is a common condition affecting up to 60 percent of men and may negatively affect a man's self-esteem and his body image. At our plastic surgery practice in South Florida, Dr. Rankin helps male patients feel better about their appearance by performing breast reduction surgery. In some men, fat deposits localized in the breast region may make the breast larger; excess glandular tissue may be the problem in other cases. A comprehensive examination, then, is necessary for Dr. Rankin to be able to outline a personalized surgical plan.
